BLACKBIRD ON BUSTLE

There is nothing I love more than coming across new unconventional scents. Ordinary notes like gardenia, musk, and patchouli seem more boring to me than perfumes that imitate the olfactory components of leather, weed, or even motor oil. Perhaps that's why I'm so drawn to Blackbird fragrances. I like all things weird, and when it comes to my go-to scents, the weirder the better. The use of these more peculiar notes helps me reevaluate my perceptions of beauty, while muskier notes like leather and weed allow me to redefine myself as a sensual and more empowered individual.

Not only is it fun to discover how, say, a Play-Doh-inspired scent smells, but it's also pretty great to see how that smell transports you to moments of nostalgia, love, or comfort. For me, scent is beyond mainstream beauty and consumerism: It has the power to transform, especially now that the ever-evolving idea of what perfume should smell like is arguably becoming freer.

Some of the more unconventional scents out there are not always super wearable unfortunately (note: Don't wear a perfume that smells like a campfire unless you like the smell of smoke and charred skin). Other times the concepts of these wild fragrances are far better than their actual end result (hello, pure bacon perfume). But fragrance and grooming company Blackbirdseems to have things figured out.

BROKEN GLASS - THE SEASON'S BEST SUMMER SCENTS BY ESSENTIAL HOMME

In a scent inspired by light breaking through shattered glass in an eruption of bright pinks and greens, the latest fromBlackbird is blend of ferocity and floral heat. Geranium and violet leaves, accented by jasmine and hints of rose, mix with caraway seeds and opopanax resin to create a pastel burst of summer brilliance. Hidden in secret, notes of soft woods and cardamom are mixed with bitter almond for a virile compilation of nature’s most prolific aromas.

BROKEN GLASS REVIEW BY NOW SMELL THIS

Broken Glass was developed by Blackbird's in-house perfumer, Aaron Way. Its composition includes notes of jasmine, geranium, rose, opopanax, amyris, angelica root, violet leaf, chamomile, davana, bitter almond, cardamom and pink pepper, and it's inspired by the effect of bright light shining through shards of glass. That description made me expect a cool, spiky fragrance, but Broken Glass feels warm and comfortably enveloping instead. I'm guessing that it might include a generous dose of natural ingredients: its resins, in particular, are smooth and aromatic. To me, Broken Glass is primarily a balsamic-woodsy fragrance with hints of spice. Its florals (yes, rose!) are very subtle and dusky, and the tonka adds a touch of nutty sweetness in the base. Overall, Broken Glass has moderate staying power and sillage, and it feels quite androgynous.

BLACKBIRD ON MR MAGAZINE

Some better men’s boutiques are already hip to the grooming game, with dedicated areas offering everything from shaving and sunscreen products to lip balms and beard oil. Seattle men’s store Blackbird eschewed apparel entirely in favor of grooming products and department stores invariably locate their beauty business immediately behind their revolving doors. While there are certainly still some men who think of primping as a primarily feminine pursuit, the return of barber-shop culture, and burgeoning online subscription services like Birchbox prove they can be taught. And there’s still room for growth.

BLACKBIRD'S ZOLA JESUS TAIGA - Fragrantica

Zola Jesus is the stage name for artist Nika Roza Danilova (in Russian: Ника Роза Данилова), an American-born vocalist and multi-instrumentalist of Russian descent. A classically trained musician raised in the forests of rural Wisconsin, she cites a myriad of influences across multiple genres—punk, new wave, no wave, pop, opera—which inform her unique sound today. Zola Jesus has released five albums to date, with the most recent being 2014's Taiga, after the Russian snowforest.

It's fitting on many levels that Zola Jesus teamed up with edgy Seattle, Washington design studio Blackbird to create a fragrance that captures the essence of her latest album. More than 50% of the state of Washington is covered by forests. Taiga was written on Vashon Island, which is near Seattle. The tree-filled video for "Dangerous Days" was filmed in Washington's Hoh Rainforest. Zola Jesus Taiga perfume is filled with precious wood, smoky notes and touches of lush greenery—a veritable taiga in a bottle. I can't think of a designer more suited to create a fragrance like this than Blackbird.

It's absolutely perfect, too, that Blackbird, known also for their amazingly creative incense compositions, have released Zola Jesus Taiga as incense pyres in addition to the perfume.

Alternating Floral Scents with Drier Notes - About Style

Not everyone is a fan of rose perfumes. Or jasmine fragrances or floral fragrances  in general. What to do? One rule would be to avoid complex blends, which will just morph after a bit of time, and opt for straight shooters. With notes of ink, paper, tobacco and dry woods, Blackbird’s perfumes are developed after 9 years of research. From the futuristic landscape of Pipe Bomb to the oddly foreign, yet comforting scent of Mizuchi, the collection has something for everyone RRP$38.

BLACKBIRD PERFUME SAMPLES IN MOOD MAYBE

It’s been a bit since the last test fest, but finally the perfect opportunity came up. My friend Alice recently bought a set of eight testers from Blackbird Ballard. Based out of Seattle, Blackbird’s line of perfumes, incense and other apothecary-type items are an offshoot of their (now defunct) menswear shop. Their scents are nontraditional, unique and often unisex, which is right up my alley. I decided to take a break from Byredo's Mojave Ghost for the day and test them out with Alice to see what they conjured up. Aside from Moto Oud, which was the first to pique her interest and how she found Blackbird, we didn’t read any of the descriptions until after we’d tested them out. From a rich hippie's house to juniper and money, read on for our impressions and hop over to their site where they are having a factory seconds sale (word has it these sell out fast).
